Default Cattle Egret

Once common throughout South Florida, population has suffered a sharp decline over the last decade. Several studies are underway to ascertain the causes.

They are originally African birds. Named because they are frequently spotted riding on the backs of cattle/grazers, waiting for them to stir up some insects as they move around. They then somehow managed to get to South America and bred their way up to the U.S. Even though they are non-native species, they had become so common that their sudden decline set off all kinds of alarms that something bad must be happening in the local environment. Their decline does correlate to the rapid rise of the local alligator population and they aren't the brightest birds in world, so perhaps there are just a whole lot of well fed gators out there.

I'm curious how they are different than the Snowy Egret. Thank's...

They are smaller than Snowies and have spread much further. They also don't develop the billowy plumes that distinguish the Snowy Egret. You once could find Cattle Egrets in your front yard even in urban residential districts, something Snowies rarely (if ever) do. If there were bugs around, there were Cattle Egrets. Ahh, yes. They're all over the place in Southern Florida as I recall. Didn't know the breed. Thank's.

For whatever reason, I'm not seeing the picture show up...but I know the bird. Will have to return later and see if the image shows then.

For comparison, here's a Snowy:

Quite a bit more elegant than the Cattle Egret.
