This is part of my Action for resizing for the web and the complete explanation can be found here

The Action is still available if requested by sending me a PM with your email address, although I've change a couple of things since writing this, but hopefully for the better
VERY much appreciated...I had missed the color adj, understood the luminosity. Thank you again. The actions won't work for me, because I use Elements and elements+ but I can pretty much duplicate them I think.

Not many before & after I have. I do most of the manipulation including cropping at the time of conversion with ufraw. Then batch resize them with Irfanview. Then only small corrections & sharpening with GIMP. Unfortunately I don't retain the intermediate images. However, here is one.

Common Poorwill
Workflow (all in PSE15 w/e,ements+) Adj layer levels for exposure. Remove extraneous stuff. Dupe layer add layer mask Heavy sharpening with NIK, paint in areas to be sharpened and drop opacity to adj level of sharpness. That's pretty much it.

@Didereaux - Your photos are totally out of focus. You either have your camera set up incorrectly or you are cropping beyond your pixel capabilities.

Another recent shot, cropped, ran neat image on the background and then ran my action for a 1200px image.

I shoot RAW and use Adobe CC, crop/straighten as necessary, adjust levels, use spot healing brush if anything needs removing. NIK Dfine via PSE 10, which I prefer to later versions if I feel image is noisy. Top, original opened in PS, middle - adjustments, bottom - final image

Usually I prefer to keep the backgrounds natural, but some times they are just so "busy" as with all the small branches in this shot that they become a distraction. Also, as you see in the OOC crop, the hawk itself has branches obscuring it. Heal and Clone to the rescue.

RAW processing in Lightroom 6, then PSE 11.

After - probably could have feathered a bit around the limb, but you get the idea.
