I was also going to recommend the 400/5.6 over the 100-400, but that was before your comment that you use it for many types of photography. Although I believe the 400 has a slight IQ edge over the zoom, the 100-400 is no slouch either. One downside to some is the pump-action zoom, but that is a matter of personal taste. I have a Sigma 100-300/4 zoom that I bought at a reasonable price on e-bay and it is a decent lens, but doesn't come close to the Canon prime. I just wish I could afford the 500/4.

Robert O'Toole does beautiful wildlife work with Sigma.

Of the lenses you listed the only one I have used is the 100-400. My first one was stolen but I liked it enough to purchase another one. The push-pull zoom has never been a problem and the lens is sharp. I don't think you could go wrong with the 100-400 but the other lenses will probably give you good results also. If you can compare the lenses on your camera and then decide which is best for you.

Thanks Guys, i am going to go with the sigma 150-500 as i feel it would suit me better now to get one rented, i have found somewhere that will rent it for 7 days £52 that will give me plenty of time to give it a hammering and decide whether to buy it or not. If i am not happy with it i am going to consider going down the 400 prime route.
