I think they are barn swallows too. Cliff swallows usually have a nest only of mud, much tidier.
These are really great shots. The third one reminds me of a punk band I once saw.

I believe there were four chicks, and it certainly seemed the nest was crowded enough.

I spent a few days in Cambria, CA and the swallows were nesting on a number of the buildings. The locals seem to welcome them (not always the case, I know). This particular nest was under the awning of a market on Main Street. When I went into the market later the clerk said she noticed me taking shots of "our babies".

These are the American subspecies, so they apparently winter in South America. The European subspecies winters in southern Africa. (According to Wikipedia) They are a very widely-dispersed bird.
