Cathedral of Cordoba

While the Moors controlled Cordoba, Spain, they built a beautiful Mosque (largest at the time) on the site of a Christian church. That Mosque was later converted to a Catholic cathedral. The combination of both was captivating.

Nice that you posted the second image as well as the first.

The first really conveys the moorish architecture well. The second, shows the contrast between the two different styles so well.

The top image has nic flowing curves with nice earthy colors. It conveys a real relaxed atmosphere.

The alter in the second image is all hard edges, squared and angled and much more elaborate in decoration. It conveys a much more strict, formal, authoritative atmosphere. The conversion seems to only oddly sit within the building, not blend into it easily.

St Sofia in Istanbul also shows some contrast between different design approaches.
