Default Not quite a house or a castle

Just happened by this today as I was out walking.

Nothing special, but it looked very old and quaint:

It was next to a larger place, which obviously isn't as old (it's on the right in the next photo):

As I said, nothing special in terms of the photography, just unusual for it's size and shape. I wasn't expecting it at all.

Seemed to be at least 300-400 years old.

Regards,

Peter

Looks like a gate house or a well defended security check point, with very limited access, one door one tiny window at ground level to maintain its integrity. Times change, concerns don't!

Maybe, but it seems to be in the middle of an old property, not near the edge. There are a lot of old gates (of similar age) about 200-300 metres away, but nothing close. Maybe this existed at the end of an entrance drive or something, but then it's only about 30 metres from a lake.

I would imagine that a poortwachterhuis would be on a boundary, not in the middle of a land.

From what I could gather after googling when I got home, it has never been the boundary of a property, but being so old, you never know.

For the non-dutch speaking, a poortwachterhuis is a gate keepers house.

I'll keep looking Rense and get back to you. It's in Rijswijk, so I'll try the Gemeente.

Regards,

Peter

Ah now I know.
It is a tower for the pigeons!
(in old age a sign of richness).

That makes it the worlds biggest mailbox then...

Times change, but people still wait for the mail to arrive, either by carrier pigeon or the slower modern methods!

That makes complete sense. I couldn't see in the windows because the glass was frosted, but I'll bet you are right with that.

There were a lot of birds hanging around it and the brickwork at the top seems to provide plenty of places for birds to pirch on (you can see some doves in the photo at the top).

Have some K Rense.

In the UK it would probably fit the category "folly".
Folly - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It does look very Dutch. I'm curious about the chimneys.
