When you enter and your eyes have recovered from the strong sunlight outside, the first thing you see is the tomb of the architect Huguet. To our modern eyes, it looks strange to see the skulls and bones carved into the tombstone.

The first architect, Afonso Domingues, who designed the original building plan went blind in 1401, and died a year later. David Huguet took over. There were other architects later - building went on for a total of 170 years and, of course, styles changed.

These are described as representing the 12 Apostles. The statues are not original, of course, but copies done over the centuries.

It is difficult to identify these mediaeval representations. Too many are holding books to be certain which were the four Evangelists. It is seems certain that Peter is there by the door, with the key. The fourth from the left, holding a cross, could be Andrew. Who would be the one on his left who is chained? Perhaps the one fourth from the right with the staff is Luke, the physician.

It would be interesting to hear the views of others as to who might be who.

They are there in #3, if that is what you mean. After taking that distant view, I stood in the archway to take the left/right views more closely. There's nothing particularly special below them.

yes, but just a full width crop in two images of the columns: it gives more a sense of scale.

Maybe this gives an idea of the height. The opening in the doorway is about twice the height of a normal person. A statue is probably what was 'lifesize' in those times, and Portuguese people are still not as tall as the Dutch.

lol, no, you're not stupid. It actually took me a few minutes to even remember - it was making total sense to me that it might be Luke. LOL

When the originals were destroyed, were the replacements copied? From the sculptor's memory? Or were these completely new designs? This is really interesting.
