The artists carrying out the restoration seem to be quite young. I took these three images through the railings; I would have preferred a slightly lower POV but not being so supple nowadays..... The two artists were only lit by their working lamps.

Saturday June 20th

Went to Tomar today to shoot some more in the Charola as I didn't have so many. I also took some others. They look promising but it will take a few hours to sort them out. Took the 30D and EF-S 18-200 lens. (I find it versatile and it performs well.)

Watch this space!

I commented against photo #9 that the little chapel was impossible to photograph well. I had a go at it today (June 20th) with this result.

The whole chapel is lined with Biblical tableaux. This is one of them.

Next to the little chapel, and before one gets to the Charola is the Sacristy. It has the most amazing tiled ceiling and I got a crick in my neck trying to take this today.

I'm beginning to think I have a problem. For one thing, this is becoming a sort of blog. For another we're already on page 3 and there's still a long way to go (the place is so huge.)

That blue (cobalt) glaze has been used all over the world for centuries. Another common one, here anyway, is the yellow/orange ochre glaze.

The tables in the refectory are a much later addition. In those days you listened to good words from the pulpit while you ate in silence. Just through that door at the far end is the kitchen, with an enormous fireplace.

This fascinating sculture is in the wall at the side of the Manueline window. How did they even think of such a thing?
You can see that erosion is taking its toll.

The Manueline window is one of the best-known images of Tomar. The orangey colour is due to lichen. The Templars Cross above it is a symbol that appears everywhere. In the town of Tomar, it is inlaid into the sidewalks in a repeating pattern down many of the the streets.

I went up onto the roof of the Main Cloister in the hot sun (didn't stay that long) for this view.
(Now I look at it, this next image would also have been a suitable candidate for the 'All Sides' assignment.)

(To put it into context) you can just see the carved Templar's cross of the famous Manueline window at the bottom of the photo.

It was impossible to get a direct, head-on, view of this window which has those manueline twists in the carvings.
