We went driving around Hawley where my wife grew up and I just had to stop to get a shot of the grain elevator here. I was looking for shots that captured the essence of the plains, and this seemed to fit nicely.

This is a nice shot and the technicals are right on.
I was wondering if you got any shots from another angle? I'm asking because my eyes tend to go to the bright/colorful parts of the picture- the trailers and that RR crossing sign. NEM talks all the time about the Power Of Red, but there's also the Power Of Yellow (if that's the most colorful thing in the picture). This brought to mind a similar snapshot I took in Shawnee, OK last year, but the grain elevators were red, so they showed up much better (can post if you'd like). Course most grain elevators/storage are that ole gray tin stuff, SO I also wonder if this would work better in BW? |

You've captured the essence of a lot of rual communities in MN, ND, SD etc. Love that shot and is so much like my Home Town of Fessenden, ND!

Gonna Ditto Goofup here, he's Right on!! This is a great tech shot....
and Goofup... Did you Recommend B+W Was that really you lol buttt you are correct , i think it would look great!! Now quick note on Power Of Red lol... Correct on the yellow, ( sole Color theory ) but remember, yellow signifies CAUTION, and RED, signifies ALERT!!! lol... I think if that stop sign next to the Railroad crossing sign, was turned around facing camera , we could see the difference lol.... ok back to biz... I do agree with Goofups views here, and also believe this one is calling B&W !! Nice Shot Deiussum!! |

Thanks for the comments guys!
Goofup & Tom, I didn't get any other angles on this, but can see what you mean about the yellow sign. It does definitely feel like a shot that would be good in B&W. I'll see what I can do and post the results. ![]() Ken, there definitely are a lot of towns in the area with elevators exactly like these, aren't there? My wife and I will probably be moving back to the area next summer, so maybe I'll have to start a series on the grain elevators of various towns... Thanks for the compliment, Padre! Honestly, I think I got lucky on not blowing any highlights, though. This was a pretty quick shot while driving around town. ![]() |

Ken, I was thinking the same thing. There are a lot of barn photos here, but not so many grain elevators!
![]() Anyway, I did a B&W conversion of this. I'm a newb when it comes to using the channel mixer so feel free to let me know what I could have done better in the conversion. Also experimenting with creating my own framing plug-in for the Gimp. The few I found just didn't quite do what I wanted so I had to tweak them a bit. So let me know what you think of that as well. ![]() ![]() |

Hey Dan,
That is a great Idea!! Also, I love the conversion!! a very nice job you did there and it really brings out the feelings of that scene. You can almost smell the grain dust. ![]() So now we work on getting some nice Grain Elv. shots. Can do and will keep that in mind as Laycey and I travel across this great country of ours.
