Here we actually go backwards a little bit in the photograph sequence (apologies.)

We are looking back towards the entrance (#4) where we came in and at the original Templar Fortress. It wasn't that big; the whole complex became much bigger. The large tower is the Keep and there is a high wall around it.

wow hey thanks for posting this and i love the documentary style (even if your wife accuses you of lecturing) will probably never get to see it so now i can learn from your post. a little or a lot of good info is never a problem with a post like this please continue. i'll have to visit this forum more often . really like the staircase pics and the blurring effect

I never tire of visiting the place. Each time I see something new. I drag our visitors there, extolling its excellence; they don't believe me until they see it and then it is "WOW!"

We're lucky it is so close to where we live.

The 'hotel' accomodation for novices, monks, knights, travelling friars and others comprised a series of 'cells' arranged around the cloisters.

Nobles had the top floor, servants were in the ground floor (closer to the stables.)

The small cells were rather basic. We can go in but none of them are now furnished and so we can only guess at the lack of luxury. (It was no Marriott or Holiday Inn!)

Even if the cells were somewhat bare, the view was quiet, leading to contemplation.

Winter nights can be cold here, so there was some crude heating with warm air which circulated through the ducts you can see on the wall. (The Romans did it much better - that will be the subject of another documentary thread one of these days.)

There are a couple of stone benches by the fire in this furnace room (calefactory.)

There was a 'bakery' from which the monks distributed bread to the poor. It was sited just through the corner archway you could see through the window in #35.

Inside the brick-built domed bread oven. They simply lit a wood fire inside, let it burn itself out, and then put the loaves in. That method is still used here in Portugal.

Not the world's best photo and I've only included it because it is part of the documentary. I had to poke the camera through that small hole and make do with the flash and what light came in. Needless to say, I've done quite some post-processing on this one to overcome wrong camera settings (I should have had it totally on manual.)

I love the little built in benches next to the windows. I can totally imagine someone sitting there in past times, contemplating while looking out of the window, the sun falling on his/her face. What a fine image that could make! Wonderful shots, Mr P.
