Default "" Jaspers", Brick Alley "

Awhile back I posted this first Pic.. A lot of people didn't seem to care for the wall on the right, ( Cement Block ) I think some felt it would be stronger just using one wall, the red brick on left...

sooooo with that in mind, I went back this past summer, to try just that, one wall..
Took me awhile to get around to playing with this shot, but I took a stab..

First Shot with the two walls.. ( old Post )

and here's the latest, trying to get it right, what do ya think, another try lol??

JASPERS BRICK ALLEY "

I must say that this new version has a much more photographic/thought out look to it.
BIG improvement in my opinion, Tom.

To my eye, the second image is definitely stronger NEM.

The leading lines from the wall and windows on the left send the eye straight back to the Jasper's Tavern sign and the guy emerging from the door. As a result, the image seemed much more focused, whereas in the first image my eye kind of wanders around not really settling on anything in particular.

Nice improvement.

Regards,

Peter

Everyone's got an opinion, so here's mine: I don't understand all the flap about the wall on the right, but it is a little boring. I don't care for the second one- too much wall and not enough Jaspers- and that cool statue on the right is cut off. What about taking the first one and cropping the right wall just to the right of the barrel on the right, and then take some off the top? The brick wall and alley would then form a diagonal line leading up to Jaspers. Sort of a combo of both.

I actually prefer the first as well. In the second, Jasper's feels like it is trying to escape the shot. It almost feels to me that the wall is the main subject, and you just happened to get Jasper's in there as an afterthought. I find myself looking more at the detail of the bricks than Jasper's.

Although I do like the 2nd one better for more continuity of color I agree with Goofup and Deiussum, the tight crop on the right has taken away from the subject. I think if you moved up to about window #5 or #6 and shot from there you would be able to get a better composition.

Tough shot tom!
I agree with goofups cropping, but if it were my shot,i would try and shoot it with a long lens at a shallow dof(with both walls present) to blur out the walls and pop Jaspers.
Maybe even do this with a motion blur effect on the walls?

Oh good! I was hoping that someone would pick the first one.
Now I will ask out of my ignorance... Could you not in this situation take a step to the right so that there is a little more distance to the left wall and then try to.... how you say.... cut off, kinda like Goofup said somewhere by the right pot or even at the white pipe? I'm just asking , not telling. This stuff is still way over my head.

Hi NEM, I think I like the first picture as well. It just feels more balanced to me. I like goofups suggestion. Cool looking building!

You guys think maybe I should stick to landscapes lol

I don't know this shot puzzles me.;.'[;]/...... Narrow alley way, and everytime I set up to shoot, someone comes or goes.. I love that brick wall, but the other wall, well its a wall.. Think I tried to hard to show off the Brick..

I can see what your all saying about the abrupt crop, and guess in looking, your right! That Alley is only about 12 Feet Wide... never been in that tavern, but hope its wider? I didn't like the Vertical Rain Spouting , and up further is a few Satellite Dishes, more ACs and other assort clutter?

Will give this one another run...and see if I can come up with something a bit different... little more Jaspers , and a weeee bit of Block wall... I won't quit ! lol...

Thanks Everyone!! Hoping to go out tomorrow to shoot, Weatherman is saying a few flurries in the morn, and then, some sun... yes Sun... ohhhhhhhh I've heard this before... Will do my usual, head out early , and hope by the time I get where I'm going, that sun will appear... I NEED SUN lol..........

Hey, Thanks Everyone!!

Lots of disscussion on this one Tom....IMO I like the first...the lines are better and lead the eye right to the subject...The wall doesnt bother me at all(dont get me wrong it would be nice to have symetry on the brick but whatcha gonna do!!)...

My main issue with the first is the bright window as my eye just is drawn to it!! Great thought prevoking thread!!

I like the first one. It gives a greater sense for where this bar is.....at the end of an alley. Did you go in for a cool one, Tom?

I like the second one best. Anothr alternative to the second one, would be to move in a little closer and move the camera to the right to get the statue from the first picture without including the right wall.
