The word "ceiling" doesn't really do justice to this amazing piece of work !

If I have a ceiling like that, I wouldn't mind being in bed for the whole day staring at it. =)
Lovely shot moonrakerz! |

Did you have to pay the new photography fee?

Yes - and No !
It is described as a "donation" - which, strictly speaking is not compulsory. I did put a fiver in the donations box quite happily, there wasn't any great pressure put on visitors to hand over money, just a large collection box inside the door. If I had wished I could have gone in for free without feeling like a cheapskate freeloader. I intend going to Wells next, I note that according to their website that you have to "buy" a £3 photography permit for there. There was considerable controversy a few years ago when Salisbury introduced an admission fee, although this was advertised as voluntary, if you did wish not to pay you had to state this at the payment window - a little bit intimidatory I think. This has now been relaxed to allow visitors to just bypass the window. I don't mind making a donation to keep these wonderful old buildings in a good state of repair but it does annoy me that the Church of England pays little, if anything, towards the upkeep of these buildings. |

I think the cost would be prohibitive even for the CoE. Many of the these structures now belong to the larger society to preserve.
As to the photo fee... I will be happy to pay if it keep the officious folks from acosting me with my gear and asking what I intend to do with the photos. They make it clear that photos are not for commercial use. I watched one attendent walk past a dozen people snaping away with their phones and point-n-shoots only to zero in on me with my dSLR. Great pic BTW... sorry for the rant. ![]() |
