Your exif said that they were around 2:00 which means the sun was probably quite strong.
You are competing with a very bright sky and shadowed ground.
They would probably be better with side lighting. Does the sun ever come around that side or does it only go around the other side of the building?

Taking those shots I was on the north side of those buildings looking south in the middle of January. So given the time of year the sun was already well to the west (my right). I agree it was a very bright day. I will need to get down there a bit earlier (or later) and give it another go.

One of the things that impressed me about Vancouver was the number of planes landing on the water at it's most unique airport. I have a number of photos---some good but most snaps. If I lived there, I could see unlimited possibilities of planes, water, skyline, sunset, etc. Wolf, You have some great potential. I'm envious.
