I was asked to shoot images of a vintage hawaiian shirt exhibit recently featured by the Memphis College of Art. I thought I would share a few colorful shots with you good Camels.

Nice work. I've never been to Hawaii. These shirts make me wonder, "Do the locals really wear them or are they called Hawaiian shirts because they sell them to toursits to wear back to the lower 48?"

I've never been there either but my guess would be the latter
I really appreciate your commenting, beginning to think I was invisible. |

Padre,
These shirts are wonderful. You did a great job. I visited Hawaii about ten years ago and I did see some locals dressed in Hawaiian garb, but it may have been for the benefit of us tourists. I also found some vintage shirts for sale and they were quite pricey. I confined my shopping to Hilo Hatties for Hawaiian wear. Cheers, Colby |

More than you want to know?: Aloha shirt - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I recall Hawaiian shirts worn by people from Hawaii when I was young (50's) but they were florals rather than the detailed scenics. Here we see one that includes a mainland road sign. Wiki explains this as a development offering some 'real' designs and some for tourists (like Chinese restaurants that have Chop Suey on the menu?). Locals wore them 50 years ago but I can't say if they still do. If a style invented in the 1930's persists in popular favor for so long it must be pretty special. The tags on these would suggest these are modern rather than 'vintage' The photo record here is excellent. |

Thanks Colby, Athena, Joan, and Doug. Doug that is some good information and you might be right about the meaning of the tags. One thing for sure is that the tags mean very high prices! Most of these were silent auction items trying to raise money for the college, which is probably a good idea.

They do shirts like these in the West Indies and I have got a few. Nothing as good as these though, can't you see me drooling at the mouth.
