This is how it's done in the middle of nowhere

Are they bullet holes in that sign? Would certainly make me cautious if I saw that sign .

Clearly you've never been to rural Alabama. :

9mm, 13 round magazine, looks like they missed a couple of times... hell, that sign's still practically brand new! :

You guys have it easy , New Zealand gunlaws are very strict . When I moved here from South Africa I bought and air rifle and went to the industrial area and was shooting tin cans to set the sights . Next thing I turn around and the armed offenders squad is there in bullet proof vests to take it away from me . They decided not to arrest me since I had just immigrated ..... I got it back from the police station the next day along with 4 brochures on gun safety .

Gun laws in the UK are very strict too (probably as strict as anywhere in the world I would guess). Personally, I see that as a positive thing, but I know gun culture is a lot different in the US (and obviously in Alabama ). Would probably make for a very interesting and heated OT subject .

I don't remember offhand ever seeing a rural stop sign that DIDN'T have a couple dings in it!

Around here, nearly everyone has guns and/or does some hunting. In our county, which is about 900 sq. miles, the deer and pheasants outnumber the 3500 residents by a long shot. Most of the kids learn growing up how to handle firearms, and to respect other people and their property--probably a more important point than knowing about guns. We have very few hunting accidents, and even less violent crime.

If we're going to be abrogating the Bill of Rights in the name of crime deterence, why don't we start with the 4th amendment? More latitude in search and seizure laws would do far more to limit crime and discover perpetrators than would clamping down on gun ownership.

The 2nd Ammendment to the US Constitution - The right to keep an bear arms... so we can deface public property!

A few years ago I used to hike about a half mile out into an old clearcut behind my house shoot 2 or 3 times a week. Nobody ever gave me any trouble, I always policed up my brass and a lot of the lead... Now I use the lead to weight my light stands. I was a competitive shooter from 1978 to 2001. Both my kids had experience with an AR-15 by the time they were 8 and my son got a Ruger 77/22 bolt action for his 10th birthday. We only shoot at my club range nowadays. We don't hunt although I love to... I just hate killing anything. I've never cared for shooting signs either but I've seen hundreds of'em that looked like swiss cheese.
