i would clean the contacts first. and make sure the lock is all the way down. another thing to check is the cycle time on the batteries. when mine are low i have that issue. it takes a reading before the flash is ready then the flash powers up and its over exposed.

yu want the flash in i-ttl mode and stay out of bl mode.
