Default S5 P and A modes with flash won't set shutter speeds

Hi

I'm new to this forum so please excuse me if this is a commonly asked question.

Occasionally I would like to use program auto or aperture priority mode when using flash. However, whenever I try this the shutter speed remains the same as it would be if in-built flash wasn't activated or my SB600 wasn't attached. This obviously results is overexposed images. Both the camera and flash manuals state that in P mode with flash the camera will take care of aperture and shutter speed. Not for me it doesn't!

The only way I have been able to use flash is fully manual - which is fine - but sometimes I want to be able walk around a room at a party and shoot without worrying about settings too much.

My lenses are both CPU - Nikkor 18-200 and Sigma 30 f1.4

This is frustrating the hell out of me, any help would be gratefully recieved. Maybe my camera is faulty?
