Because online storage and online backup are different animals. If you for example want to upload your xxx MB pst file (outlook) every time to skydrive instead of uploading much much much smaller increments to an online backup provider thank ok.

Online backup provides file versioning (mine stores up to 30 versions) and data files are compressed during upload which shoud make the file transfer faster. When I delete a file localy it is not deleted on the backup which I think skydrive will do as it is a sync tool only. Online backup provides open file backup again so you do not need to close your files for backup (outlook e.g.). Enryption I think is another thing skydrive cannot do, not so sure though.
