Fran,
My guess is that your using the wrong type of disk.

In order to burn a DVD (or CD for that matter), your burner has to support the type of disk your burning to. Not all burners support all formats.

If your using a +R disk, switch to -R, or visa versa.
These are the two most common types of DVD's.

That should clear up your burner issue.
