I had a bag of Canon primes and sold for a Tamron 28-75 and have never regretted it.
The SIgma 18-50 gets a lot of praise as well.

On the longer side, a lot of praise on the new Canon 70-300 IS.

IS is well worth having when shooting handheld over 70mm and none of the 3rd party lensmakers have it.
