Ent, bas relief is a very high contast black and white. In fact most if not all of the middle tones are removed, leaving just the highlights and shadows. It's also called pen and ink, very much like a pen and black ink drawing on a white piece of paper. Some subjects that already have a high contrast to them, like your rocks and sand, work well with this method. It's easy to do with one of the filters in Photoshop, but back in my film and darkroom days, I use to do it with litographic film and create a positive from the negative, then create a negative from that, then a positive, etc., going back and forth until I had created a very high contrast negative image, which I then printed on photographic paper.
