Thanks WG.
Fairbanks latitude is right under the "aurora ovation oval", so we see aurora almost any night it's clear and at almost any forecast Kp. With higher Kp the oval often goes south of us. This shot was actually taken looking south.

My "go-to" winter subject is aurora starting about now. You'll probably get tired of seeing them in my weekly project 52.

Week #27, Mike’s 2017 Project 52 – “Birch Lake Aurora…”

With Fairbanks nestled under cloudy skies, it truly was time to chase the Aurora Wednesday night. The best bet for clearer skies was south of town, so about one hour later I arrived at Birch Lake. The skies cleared, the moon was full and bright, and the aurora danced around for about an hour and a half. The really strong aurora that was forecast did not really materialize, but there were many decent displays. The full moon and scattered clouds gave the evening a little character. Below is a five shot pano taken at about 12:30am on 9-7-17.

Canon 5DIII, Canon 16-35mm, ~2 sec, f/3.2, iso 1600, Lightroom.

Thanks ShutterKlick.
We are pretty spoiled up here when it comes to Aurora.

Lovely shots.I will never get tired of Aurora pictures. One of my favourite subjects to shoot, when they are around in my part of the world, which isn't often.

I have been to Yellowknife a few times for that same reason - it is under the "oval" and the displays are amazing. The only problem is that it costs me too many bucks to go there often - airfare, car rental, hotel, meals, etc. I went last October, but I am not sure if I will go this year.

Week #28, Mike’s 2017 Project 52 – “Senior portrait season .”

Senior portraits are a fairly big thing around here. And it’s not just the “one-size-fits-all” sports jacket and tie in front of a gray backdrop like it was back in my day. Most everyone has “environmental portraits” taken which can become be quite involved and expensive. I only do them as a favor for family and friends, but have done about 30 over the last five years. I usually find the experience really enjoyable, especially on a nice fall afternoon. Here is one from Matt’s set.

Canon 5DIII, Canon 70-200mm @ 90mm, 1/250sec, f/2.8, iso 200, natural light, Lightroom.

Thank you WG and wolfd.

Week #29, Mike’s 2017 Project 52 – “Denali Park foliage….”

I was lucky enough this year to get a Denali Park Road Lottery ticket from my nephew, but wasn’t lucky enough to view the mountain or much of any wildlife. The skies were cloudy and the light was flat. But even a bland day in Denali is better than most days anywhere else. I will say that the drive down and back was spectacular. I have been in Alaska 55 years and I don’t know if I have ever seen the canopy of yellow and orange fall foliage so vibrant (especially around Nenana). The color in the hills in the interior has been exceptional. Denali had it’s share of fall color also. This week’s shot captures some of that color with one of many large valleys in the background near Highway Pass.

Canon 5DIII, Canon 16-25mm @ 18mm, 1/30 sec, f/18, iso 100, 3 exp +/- 2 stops, Photomatix, Lightroom.
