This one is a little late for Week 27, but I had a hard time deciding between a few images that I shot on the last weekend. My wife and I went for a drive in the country north of the city, but this one captured my imagination - for scale, the post is about 10 to 15 cm in diameter. I could say tongue in cheek that this gives you an idea of how strong the winds are in the southern prairies
- so strong that the farmers have to put rocks on their posts to hold them in the ground, well maybe - we do have those things called Chinook winds and they have been clocked at over 100 km/hr - anyway, I think of this as an intimate landscape a la Eliot Porter, not that I would compare my skills as a photographer with his, but he did coin the term, at least that is what I have been told. ![]() This was shot with my 5D and the 100-400L IS f4.0-5.6 at 400mm. Comments welcome. ![]() WesternGuy |

Well, no response to my rock on a post, so maybe this next one for Week 28 will work. This one is a first for me. At our annual Rodeo and Fair, they have fireworks displays every night, so I though I would try my hand at some fireworks, something I have never tried before. So I did a bit of research and decided on two nights worth of imaging (I found out later that the displays are very similar every night). Two nights was the limit because of the large number of mosquitos that decide to try and snack on my wife and I while this exercise was undertaken. Had to be careful of DEET in the spray because it has a tendency to dissolve plastic and the like.
The first night I shot with my 24-105 set at 100mm, f11, ISO 200, with a couple of exposure times at 1 second, and at 2 and 4 seconds. The 4 second exposure was too long and the 2 second speed was just a bit too long as you can see from the first exposure. The second night, I used my 70-200 f2.8L IS, set at 200mm, f11, ISO 200 and a speed of 1 second. Both images were processed in Lightroom 4.1 There was quite a variety of colours in the displays - greens, reds, yellows, blues and this first one is one of the green ones. This one was taken with the 24-105 with a 2 second exposure. ![]() The next one is one of the blue ones with a bit of yellow thrown in and was taken on the second night with the 70-200 and a 1 second exposure. ![]() I will be posting a selection of my shots on my Flickr account later this week and I will post a link at that time. As always, comments are welcome. Thanks for looking. WesternGuy P.S. Can anyone tell me how I can get smaller images in my postings. I only seem to be able to get these large ones and I feel there must be a way to get smaller ones as others seem to be able to do it. Thanks. |

That rock image reminds me of something, I just can't put my finger on it...this image works for me because of the starkness. Just a large rock on a post. How unlikely is that? Wonderful image, Sir, and I bet would be a killer in B&W!!
The fireworks are pretty darn good too. I have had no luck with them as of yet. __________________
