I'd wait a while...
There have been some rumors about an updated and upgraded 100-400L coming down the road from Canonland.
If that Is true; I will sell my 300mm f/4L IS and my 400mm f/5.6L (both outstanding lenses) for the convenience of the zoom range.
I don't shoot the 100-400mm now because I don't like push-pull operation.
Heck, I have trouble walking and chewing gum at the same time! Push pull is beyond my capabilities. (I'm kidding - I don't use push-pull lenses because I just don't like them!)
On the subject of the 70-200mm choices... I purchased the f/4L IS model and I love it. It is light enough to be used as a go-to, everyday, carry-around lens. You will often see posts by 70-200mm f/2.8 (series) owners who are not taking their great big lenses on one trip or another because of the size and weight of that lens.
I take mine everywhere and it is, along with the 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens on 30D and 40D cameras, a part of my two lens travel and general purpose battery.
