that way, the family gets their photos, the professional photog gets their photos, which are unique in perspective, and location.

and everybody wins.

It is a mixture, sometimes there isn't an alternate location close enough or available, or there isn't enough time to go to one. Many times the reception and ceremony are held at the same venue.
