You may also want to shop for a 20D. Many people who had the 20D bypassed the 30D (in favor for the 40D) as they said it didn't offer much improvements. A good 20D and be found pretty reasonably priced.
I had a 30D and sold all my EF-S hardware to finance getting a 5D. In hindsight I do (at times) need a second body and shouldn't have sold my 30D body. I found a 20D body for $400 and have no regrets.
