Well, remember that infrared doesn't see shadows like standard setups do. I've never shot infrared but don't remember seeing deep shadows and fast falloff in infrared images, especially outdoors.
Part of the fast falloff and deep shadows is the lack of all around lighting or anywhere to bounce. With that big 'ole hot light in the sky, it's pretty difficult to get deep shadows unless you're shooting very early/late or overpower the sun with your own lighting.
