I prefer softboxes over the harsher direct light. I like the quick falloff of a double diffused softbox, especially if bounce can be controlled, like here and here (note: nudity on those links). The first shot is actually a AB ringflash mounted overhead as a circular softbox ala Octabox. The second is a large softbox at camera left and a masked strobe hitting the background from above.

That's just my take on it, though, and I've seen well executed shots done with direct strobes.
