I have the Nikon 70-300 VR and am very happy with the results. As for a teleconverter a Kenko 1.4 will work. The Nikon teleconverter will not as the lens extends too far into their mount. I have only tried the tele once and had resonably good shots. If you have plenty of light, no problem.
