I've been looking at he 70-300 VR all over the place and I've found these two:

Without VR Sigma | 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro Autofocus Lens | 508306

and this f:/4.5 w/VR: Nikon | 70-300mm f/4-5.6G AF-S VR Autofocus Lens - Black | 2161

I want to get one within the next few months but I dont want to spend a whole lot of money on it. We are going away on vacation in mid July and I want to take this with me. Any comments, or ideas where I can pick up a good glass, seems I really do need VR capable (I was actually thinking of not getting it) and not break the bank? Nikon, Sigma and Tamron or my choices and not in any particular order.

Also, I've seen where these less expensive glass doesn't take the Tele Converters. Is this true, also my 18-135mm Kit Lens cant take the Converters either.
You'll find that practically none of the variable aperature zooms will take teleconverters. And you wouldn't want to have them on there anyway. Teleconverters degrade the image quality. Also, you'd lose autofocus ability beyond f/8 or so on most DSLRs. So if you were to put a 2x teleconverter on a constant f/4 lens, you now have an f/8 lens at it's widest open aperature.
