I sympathize with you. I got my 40D in November and also couldn't figure it out, until I read the manual in disbelief how many thing had to be set to "ON" before it would work. It is almost the feature can be dangerous to either the photographer or the subject and they REALLY want to make sure you REALLY want LV. LOL
