Hi graigsexton,
...that is actually very easy: what you need is a USB2.0 cable, which, if not 'active', can be maximal 5 meter long, with the mini-USB plug that goes into your cameras on one side, and a regular USB plug that fits your PC/Laptop on the other side.
Install EOS Utility and ZoomBrowser from the CD of the latest camera (30D), then go to the Canon website and download and install their latest versions.
Power up your PC, plug your camera in, then put it On: your PC should now recognise the camera and either start up EOS Utility, or give you the option to do so, then go to 'Camera Settings/Remote Shooting'
Follow the on-screen instructions, but basically after that you can start shooting
But for the record: under the 'Preferences...' button you will find all kind of settings as to how the files should be stored: in-camera, on-disk or both, and you can specify a specific download-path-folder. You an also specify a Browser to your liking, but for first (installation-)use, make sure ZoomBrowser is available on the PC

, and many more settings...
Please note, that when a camera is attached, you can control almost anything from the PC also, great for Macro or shooting with the camera - on a tripod / - in studio or - both
The 1D(s) Mk III, 40D and 450D also now offer LiveView: look on your monitor and see what your sensor is seeing, with live-histogram and all, before the shot is taken: for this feature to work, LiveView has to be 'Enabled' on-camera first, but does not have to be 'active' yet, you can control that from the PC
Please also note, that you can now easily synchronise the time of both cameras with your PC: this is very handy when you use two cameras in a single shoot/event, and want to view the images in the correct chronological order
And finally pleae note, that you can add your name/tag/company to your camera, and to the EXIF of every image you take with it afterwards, great for © reasons

, this can be done when the camera is attached and On and you go to the tab with the hammer-and-plyers ('settings') logo.
...just find the CD, that is probably the hardest part
...€0.02...
And my kindest regards!
