Right click on the shortcut of the program on your desktop and bring up Properties.
Click on the Compatibility tab.
Check the box "Run this progrm in compatibility mode for" and select the version of Windows (95 through XP SP2) you want/need to run it in. That "should" get those old programs running.

You really need to upgrade some of those programs (but you know that), and just make sure all the future software purchases are Vista compatiable.
