E-1. I know I'm expected to say this, being an Oly fanboy and all, but you can pick up an E-1 + lens for $600 or less. Failing that, the E-500 twin lens kit for not much difference in price. All depends on how far they want to take it. Pro body but 'antiquated' 5.5 MP sensor, or cheaper construction but with two fine lenses that cover most focal length requirements. If I were to look beyond Oly, then I'd go for something cheap like a Nikon 2dh - great build and seems like good value these days. Perfect for when granny wants to shoot some pro football .
