It depends on what they want it for. If it's mostly a studio camera, I can heartily recommend a Kodak DCS-760, which is a 6MP digicam built into a Nikon F5 body. The biggest problem, though, is the same as for the Nikon D1x - old battery technology that is bulky and several spares will be needed.

A used DCS-760 kit will run $750-900 with charger and a couple of battery packs. But these things are big honkers for carrying around in the field.
