Default 365 At-a-Glance

Hello!

My name is Jenn. I'm new around here. A bit about me: 38 years old, married with a teenage daughter. Two dogs, a cat, and a budgie. I'm a full-time student, going for an Art degree. I haven't decided between a Fine Art or Art History degree, but I'm leaning on Fine Art with a concentration in Photography.

I've always been told I have "good eye" but I didn't get serious about photography until 3-4 years ago. I have done some commercial work, but my main interest in photography is as a vehicle for social inquiry and self-expression.

I enjoy portraits, still life, and nature. But I photograph a wide variety of subjects. I'm hoping this 365 project will push me to be more inventive and adventurous, get me out of the house during these cold months, keep me learning and exploring this medium. I also want to use this thread as a journal to track technique, so I will be posting camera settings, post-processing information, setup, and what was going through my head at the time.

My equipment:

Nikon D800; Nikon FM
Variety of lenses: 28mm, 50mm, 60mm, 105mm, and a few zooms.
Nikon Speedlight SB-700

I do shoot film occasionally, but most images will be digital. I shoot RAW and use Photoshop CC to post-process. I also use Plug-ins like Alien Skin and Nik.

That is all for now. Looking forward to becoming part of this community.

Okay, so my first real photo-post!

Today, I didn't do much setting up. The point was to practice using on camera flash, specifically my speedlight. I've had it for a year and barely used it. I normally shoot with available light.

The weather was horrible. Very dreary, overcast sky. Utterly flat lighting. I talked my daughter into a few shots outside, but she's a teen and it's hard to get her to cooperate. She'll do "selfies" with her phone all day long, but when I pull out a camera she cops an attitude. I don't get it.

Anyway, my favorite shot of her emphasizes this rebellious teenage phase.

Lens: Nikon 50mm 1.4
Camera settings: f 10, 1/100, ISO 250

I turned the speedlight to the side and used the attached bounce card. Had it set to TTL. The light setting was set to even. I could have tried setting it to more of a direct light. Maybe next time.

Here's another version in B&W. I burned out much of the background here and used Nik Silver effects for the conversion. Sort of looks like a throwback.

Next, I asked my husband if he would mind. He is much easier to photograph! Again, my goal was to practice using on camera flash with the speedlight.

Lens: Nikon 105mm 2.8
Settings: f 9; 1/80; ISO 320

For this shot, I pointed the flash straight up and used the white bounce card. I definitely preferred the results to when it was turned.

The image itself was sharpened and I used Alien Skin to tone it.
