You may want to EDIT your images in 16-bit to preserve as much "stuff" as possible. When you are done, a last step could be to convert to 8-bit and save ANOTHER version...?
Some do everything in 8-bit. Some edit and save in 16-bit, always. If they need a file printed, or posted they convert to 8-bit, resize, whatever and save just that re-do as 8-bit. Saving as 8-bit and as 16-bit could be thought of as similar to saving a PSD and a JPG. Twice as much files and that may not be what some want.
