Would a compact 35mm film camera have better IQ than a G9 ?

If you were looking for a pocketable 35mm film camera, possibly used, that was the equivalent of a G9, but in film, what would you get ?

I am trying to get DSLR type IQ from someting smaller than a DSLR.

I want something with manual controls (P,A,S,M, metering needle, etc.)
