In a nut shell, I did an auto underpainting in Painter(I don't remember which brush I used) then used the smudge tool in PS and did the fine details in the birds. I then lightly smoothed out the sand and adjusted and saturated everything. I kind of spend a lot of time on things like this. I don't start with a vision of the final product, I just play until I end up with something I'm happy with. I end up dumping more paintings than I keep because I don't like the result. Sometimes I get lucky!
