A4 (and A1, A2 A3 etc) are ISO standard paper sizes in use throughout the world, apart from the US, Canada, Mexico and the Philippines. I believe the nearest to A4 in the US is Letter. There's plenty of info on the various sizes out there - my reference for most of these things is Wikipedia.

The following image is from the Wikipedia Commons free image repository, and shows the various A sizes - which all have the aspect ratio of the square root of 2.
