Many local shops ask for this so they know you're serious and won't back out, then they can order accordingly from the camera manufacturer. Also, paying a deposit "should" give the person placing the deposit an advanced place in line over anyone simply asking to be put on a notification list. Others stores ask for your credit card info but won't charge you until your camera actually ships. Of course you can cancel anytime without penalty this way. Sometimes the actual cash deposit is not refundable.
