Nice shots. I love my 50-200 and have thought about getting the 1.4x (does it adversely affect autofocusing?)
Were you shooting jpeg or raw? If jpeg then in-camera sharpening may have happened. Even with the raw converters some of them apply sharpening by default. And if you downsize with bicubic sharper then I believe that does some sharpening as well. So I think you have to work at it to avoid any sharpening whatsoever.
