The avatar is a studio self-portrait, so the dark areas are cropped out. Should also mention that it was with a pretty wide angle lens (probably around 24mm). I didn't have a cable release available that day, so I'm just reaching out my arm to press the shutter button on the camera--about 2 feet away.

But back to exposure... yes, if you open up to expose the faces properly the highlights may well blow out. The idea is to control those highlights by how/where you place the subject. Try to go out on overcast days without a direct sun. That will lower the dynamic range of the scene to fit the camera better. Or accept a few highlights rimming the hair. If there are bright/distracting elements in the background change your angle.
