All I can recall is that the only non-Kodak Oly cam I had was the E-330 and I thought it didn't have the same colour range as the E-1. The E-400 is fairly similar to the E-1, and has an obvious bonus in detail - really does stand out.
I have nothing against the MOS type sensors (I use a Canon 5D and it's great), but I do see something in the E-1 (and slightly less so in the E-400) that does stand out compared to the E-330 or the 5D for that matter. A lot of it may just be the RAW processing engine, and I'm not going to analyse it too deeply, but it does exist in my eyes.
I agree with Riley about the red bias - it's quite obvious in the E-1. It also does brilliantly blue skies too though so it's not like a permanent red shift across the image. Whatever it is, Olympus should bottle it up as a style and make it available in any cam they release in the future. For portraits especially it's as good as I've ever seen.
