It's a proven fact that sliding results in a slower time to the bag - if you can overrun it, which is always the case at first after a hit. The only sliding into first should be from the other other direction, when a line drive is snagged out of the air by an infielder, or a pitcher or catcher makes a snap throw to first to catch a base runner leading off too far. In summery, the player is flat wrong, and even if he was safe, I'd yank him for a pinch runner that knew how run the bases, if he was one of my players. But I'm a tough-ass bench coach.
