Teleconverters should really be used with fast, fixed aperature lenses.

The 70-300 VR starts out at f/4.5 and is a variable aperature lens, by full extension you're at f/5.6

I don't think you'd really want to try a teleconverter on this lens. *As I've said many times before, "Unfortunately, there are very few inexpensive ways to go beyond 300 or 400mm."
