I hear what Lunatique is saying but is it not also true that Gaugin and Van Gogh among other impressionists had to listen to such concerns but carried on regardless and ploughed their own path. Initially, as I remember, what they produced was not that great but eventually they produced something unique. i.e. what I am saying is that a formal art training can be an asset but the lack of it should not inhibit a child from developing a love for drawing or a photographer from painting with light. Some will do it well, and some will do it not so well, but that is the same in every field.
