By best, what you really mean is best-selling I guess? That's an important thing to consider, but following this to the logical conclusion we should all be using Canon as they have by far the largest market share and have lots of lenses and accessories should you wish to expand in the future. There are other things to consider though, not least of which is that if you don't at least try some alternatives then you won't appreciate the strengths available with other systems.

Just to echo some other comments here, it would be difficult to argue against the Olympus E-1 as one of the best DSLR deals on the market. A new body can be picked up for less than the price of a basic entry level DSLR, but will give you a heck of a lot more for your money. The middle range lenses aren't that expensive, and the system is building nicely. I personally preferred it to the Canon 5D for many things (apart from low light candids). You can't go wrong with your Canons/Nikons either of course, but they're certainly not the only players in town.
