My advice: When something doesn't feel right, walk away. Easy to say now, of course, but listen to your gut and be prepared to simply cancel the whole thing.

I've done it with a whole lot more money at stake (non-photography related). If I'm not comfortable with the situation or the way things seem like they might turn out, I'll pack up my stuff and walk away (or fly back across country with a several thousand dollar loss, like I did).

Contracts are a battle of wills to a final compromise. Neither party should completely win and neither party should completely lose. Changing the terms mid-stream is a big, big walk away flag for me.
