The quality of the light is very nice, and I like the nice transition from highlight to shadow on his face. I too don't care for the pose, but just about ANY boy hates to have his photograph taken, especially a 12 year old!

I don't think the shoulder is blown out, yes it is bright but it should be brighter than the other shoulder because it is closer to the light source. Five seconds with the Burn tool in Photoshop would take it down nicely.
